Situated very near the Dutch coast and the dunes, in between the famous flower bulb fields, natural inspiration is all around the people of Staro. Since 1989 the business of the brothers Franck and Rob van Graas has been a major player in green retail products, promotional gifts and saving campaigns.
Dutch flowers are famous and loved all over the world. It is less known that the Netherlands is also one of the biggest seed suppliers in the world.
Staro Nature's Finest, based close to the Dutch beach resort of Noordwijk and surrounded by bulb fields knows how to transform these quality products into eco-friendly retail products and business gifts on the basis of wishes and trends in the market.
The company specializes in marketing, design and tasteful packaging of seeds, flower bulbs and associated products.
"We like to play in the champions league of all growing and flowering articles in the area of seeds ", according to Franck van Graas, who established the business thirty years ago jointly with his brother Rob.
The Staro team developed its own 'Drop & Grow' concept in various variations. The seeds are glued on to a compressed soil tablet so that the recipient only has to add water to have a lovely plant as a final result.
There are for instance Stand-up Drop & Grow pouches, made from foil that can be printed with all kinds of designs.
They are completely biodegradable and FSC certified. The cup and the lid can be customized. Staro patented this product. The glue to stick on the seeds has also been patented.
The third variant is the Drop & Grow terracotta pot, a complete kit to grow your own herbs, vegetables or flowers. It consists of a 5 or 9 centimeters diameter terracotta pot and a saucer with a soil tablet with seeds glued on to it and covered by a card sleeve which can be customized.
Staro supplies green products for the B2B market, loyalty programs and retailers; including large supermarkets in the Benelux.
Staro has also developed vegetable gardens. This product is deployed as a saving campaign for large supermarkets in Europe. Franck van Graas: The campaign is as follows:
we package 24 different types of seeds. They are mixed and delivered in a box. When you spend 10 to 15 euro you get a pot with seeds. The intention is to collect the complete seed collection. In this campaign we often deliver associated products such as watering cans, gloves and a collecting container to put the pots in."
Staro is flexible with regard to the numbers purchased. They can produce 500 packages but can also quickly upscale to produce millions of packages.
Staro works with ten permanent employees and more manpower is deployed in the busy period between November and April. To this end the personnel engaged includes people from sheltered workshops.
Franck van Graas: “We use automated production lines for seed packets, flat- and doy-pack pouches, flow packs, trans-wrap bags and carton packages. For hand assembling our products we often use Dutch companies that employ disabled and reintegrating people.”
The company retains an accurate overview of the entire production process. Franck van Graas: “To maintain our high quality we check our products from start till end product. We have trial gardens and in-house germination tests where we test our seeds. We also visit and inspect our key added value product suppliers and factories on a regular basis. This all produces a top quality product.”
In addition Staro is Skal certified for organic seeds and also FSC® certified for carton packages and wooden urban gardening furniture.
